On a tight budget, and if 300mm is long enough then I would suggest the 55-300mm Nikkor.ДЇor a longer lens then the 200-500 Nikkor at rather more than 4 times the price. If you are planning to hand hold then the unstabilised version of f6.3 lens would be a big un-neccessary liability. Thom was not as dismissive as I expected but I would be concerned about the f 6.3 aperture. If this is fully compatible with the D3200 then the VR version is worth a look. There is also the very new 70-300 f6.3 which I am not familiar with and have not even investigated because I have these focal lengths already covered well enough. The 55-300 (latest version) is quite well thought of for its cost.I have no experience of it. You support the weight of the combination by supporting the lens. With all these serious lenses you consider the camera as an accessory of the lens.

The 70-300 f4.5-f5.6 is another full frame lens which is very usable(and which I have owned for several years) but it was designed before the time of 24Mp Dx cameras.

I do have a tripod and gymbol head but quite franckly I do not have the dedication to carry that lot around plus a very heavy lens. I once used a hired 400mm and as optically superb as it was I have never wanted to own one.

The f4.0 professional long lenses are very heavy and cannot be hand held except for a few seconds. It is sharp enough to use wide open at 500mm. The AF and VR are remarkably good but you need to turn the zoom ring a long way to move from 200 to 500mm. I would rather have f5.6 at 500mm than 600mm at f 6.3. This may not seem cheap but it is very competative with offerings from Sigma and Tamron. This lens can be used handheld especially if you can rest your left elbow on a fence post or wall. I am lucky enough to own the 200-500 Nikkor. A 500 is not so easy to use handheld so a tripod and gimbal mount (where the lens hangs from rather than sits on the balance point) need to be factored in. The Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G boasts absolute Nikon D5600 lens compatibility and is a fairly good device that offers entry-level optics functionality. The main use is for bird and nature photography but it should be said that a small bird is a small bird and getting the biggest lens won't automatically produce frame-filling shots. I think Nikon just introduced one to take on Sigma and Tamron but I'm not sure. A zoom going to 500 mm is a very big thing. A zoom going to 300 mm is good for larger animals and the zoo and birds such as ducks, swans, gulls that will come close. I use Canon not Nikon so I'm not sure of the Nikon line-up but if I was buying today I'd look for a 100-400 zoom as an all rounder good for the zoo, wildlife including larger birds, and general use.

These days a zoom going to 400 mm can have a good performance.

When I started the quality of telephoto zooms at their longest focal length and maximum aperture (which is where you are at for wildlife most of the time) was not so good so I bought a 300 F4 with x1.4 teleconverter to give me a 420 F5.6. The latter get very, very expensive as focal length increases. In broad terms you have rwo choices - zoom lenses or prime (fixed focsl length)lenses.
